Christopher Nolan Is Bringing The Odyssey to IMAX on July 17
The most anticipated film of 2026 has a cast nobody saw coming: Matt Damon as Odysseus, Zendaya as Athena, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, and Charlize Theron. It opens July 17.

The December 2025 trailer for Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey hit 121 million views in its first 24 hours. A countdown trailer followed on July 1. London premiere is in four days. The US release is in fifteen. Whatever Nolan is doing with Homer's 2,700-year-old epic, the world is paying attention.
The Odyssey is the most anticipated film of 2026 according to IMDb. Variety is predicting it will be the year's highest-grossing film based on pre-sale data alone. That is a significant statement for a movie with a $250 million budget and no superhero in the cast.

What the Film Is About
The Odyssey follows Odysseus, king of Ithaca, on his long journey home after the Trojan War. The poem has him navigating ten years of mythological obstacles: the Cyclops Polyphemus, the nymph Calypso, the Sirens, the sorceress Circe. Back in Ithaca, his wife Penelope holds off a house full of suitors who believe Odysseus is dead and want to claim his throne, while his son Telemachus comes of age trying to figure out who his father was.
Nolan's film adapts the source material directly. No modern setting, no concept reframe. This is the original story, shot at IMAX scale on 70mm film.
The Cast and Why It Is Fascinating
Matt Damon as Odysseus makes sense immediately. Odysseus in the poem is not the strongest warrior in the Greek army. He survives on intelligence, adaptability, and patience. He is a man who knows when to tell the truth and when to tell a story that sounds like the truth. Damon has spent 25 years playing exactly that kind of character.
Robert Pattinson plays Antinous, the lead suitor who believes Penelope should give up on Odysseus and marry him. Pattinson has become genuinely interesting to watch in recent years, and a suitor who projects confidence while sitting in a dead man's chair is good use of that.
Zendaya as Athena is the casting that has generated the most discussion. Athena in the poem is Odysseus's protector throughout, the deity who consistently intervenes to keep him moving. She is not a goddess who stands at a distance. She gets involved. Zendaya can carry that kind of layered authority.
Lupita Nyong'o plays dual roles as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra. Both women exist at the edges of the main narrative and both carry massive weight within Greek mythology. Nyong'o is one of the few actors who could make two distinct presences out of what could easily be cameo roles.
Nolan's trailer approach was cryptic and vibes-first, meant more to tease the mood of the film than to give away plot. It pulled 121 million views in 24 hours on restraint and atmosphere alone. WriteO News, July 2026 |
The IMAX 70mm Question
This is the first film Nolan has shot entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras. He has used the format partially on past films, but every frame of The Odyssey was captured at that size. The grain of 70mm film at IMAX scale produces an image that looks fundamentally different from digital, particularly in large outdoor sequences and anything involving sky or ocean.
The Odyssey involves the sea in almost every act. Shooting it the way Nolan chose to means the film will look like nothing else in theaters this summer.
The Trailer Strategy
Nolan's team dropped the official trailer in December 2025 to 121 million views in 24 hours, then went quiet for months. A CinemaCon presentation followed in April 2026, a new trailer on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in May, then a countdown trailer on July 1. Each piece has been deliberate, showing mood and scale without giving the story away. The restraint is part of the campaign.
London Premiere and Release
The film premieres in London on July 6, with US and UK theatrical release on July 17. It will be available in IMAX and multiple premium large formats.
WHAT WRITERS CAN TAKE FROM THIS • The Odyssey has survived 2,700 years because Homer built a structurally precise story: a protagonist with a clear destination, obstacles that reveal character, a home that represents everything worth surviving for, and a resolution that requires the hero to prove who he actually is. • Matt Damon as Odysseus is a casting decision rooted in character fit. Odysseus's defining trait is intelligence under pressure, and that led directly to who plays him. • Nolan chose IMAX 70mm specifically for a story set on the sea. Format decisions are storytelling decisions, not just technical ones. • Every trailer release was rationed deliberately. What you withhold often builds more anticipation than what you show. • The story that has lasted longest in Western fiction is not the most complex one. It is the one where the stakes are simplest and the most personal. |
The Odyssey is 2,700 years old and still the reference point for every journey narrative in Western fiction. Nolan is not reinventing it. He is giving it scale. If you are building a world that needs to hold together visually and tonally across a long story, WriteO's Moodboard lets you collect visual references, tonal anchors, and world-building materials in one workspace so your creative research has somewhere to live rather than scattering across browser tabs.
