It was published quietly in 2025 and became a word-of-mouth phenomenon. On June 11, 2026, at a ceremony in Bedford Square Gardens, London, it won the Women's Prize for Fiction.

What the Book Is
The Correspondent is told entirely in letters. The protagonist, Sybil Van Antwerp, is 73 years old, a retired lawyer, writing to friends, family, and real writers she admires. The novel follows the choices she has made, the ones she regrets, and the unexpected possibilities that remain at 73.
Evans wrote it during the pandemic when she had no expectation of what would happen to it. It was published without significant fanfare in 2025. It found its readers through recommendation rather than marketing. Those readers talked about it loudly enough that it reached the Women's Prize shortlist and then the win.
What the Win Represents

Lionsgate has acquired the film rights to The Correspondent. Jane Fonda is attached to star as Sybil Van Antwerp and will also co-produce. Fonda is 88 years old. Sybil is 73. That casting is not a stretch. It is a precise decision: an actress whose public life has included as many second acts as Sybil's fictional one is being asked to play a woman examining the choices that made her.
No director or screenplay writer has been announced for the adaptation. No release date exists. The attachment is recent. The project is in its earliest stage.
