The BookTok Phenomenon Powerless Is Coming to Amazon Prime Video
Lauren Roberts' debut spent 19 weeks at #1 on the NYT list. Now the Maxton Hall showrunner is adapting it.

Amazon Prime Video is developing a TV series adaptation of Powerless, the debut novel by Lauren Roberts that spent 19 weeks at number one on the New York Times Young Adult Bestseller List. Daphne Ferraro, head writer on Maxton Hall's breakout first season, is the creator and showrunner.
No cast has been announced. No production date has been set. But the pairing of one of BookTok's biggest novels with the showrunner behind one of BookTok's most beloved adaptations is the combination the fandom has been waiting for.
AT A GLANCE • Platform: Amazon Prime Video • Showrunner and creator: Daphne Ferraro • Author role: Lauren Roberts is executive producing • Production: Lyrical Media, Olive Bridge (Will Gluck) • Source material: Powerless (2023), Reckless (2024), Fearless (2025) • Season 1 will cover the first book only • No casting or production date announced yet |
What Powerless is about
The story is set in the kingdom of Ilya, divided between the Elite, citizens with powers, and the Ordinary, who have none. Paedyn Gray is an Ordinary living as a thief in the slums. When she accidentally saves the life of Prince Kai, second son to the king, she is thrown into the Purging Trials: a brutal competition promising glory to those who survive.
What follows is an enemies-to-lovers story built on a society designed to keep Paedyn and Kai apart. The trilogy runs Powerless (2023), Reckless (2024), and Fearless (2025).
Roberts published Powerless independently before it went viral on BookTok and BookTube. A publishing deal followed. The NYT run followed that. By the time Amazon acquired it, the series already had millions of readers.
Why the Maxton Hall connection matters
Daphne Ferraro was the head writer on Maxton Hall Season 1, the German-language Amazon series based on Mona Kasten's novel. Maxton Hall became Amazon MGM Studios' biggest international original series launch to date. The show and the book fuelled each other, a textbook BookTok adaptation success story.
Before Maxton Hall, Ferraro wrote on Netflix's Dark Season 2 and the screenplay for the feature Fly. She is also an executive producer on Powerless alongside Roberts.
The Maxton Hall playbook, enemies-to-lovers, class tension, atmospheric setting, BookTok-literate storytelling, maps almost directly onto Powerless. This is not a random pairing.

Amazon replaced one fantasy with another
Amazon cancelled The Wheel of Time after three seasons in May 2025. Within weeks, Powerless was announced as an Amazon MGM development. The studio is not stepping back from fantasy — it is replacing a lore-heavy ensemble show with something younger, more romance-forward, and closer to where its streaming audience actually is.
Fourth Wing is also in development at Amazon Prime Video. Between that and Powerless, the platform is building a romantasy slate that mirrors exactly what BookTok has been driving readers toward for the past three years.
WHAT WRITERS CAN TAKE FROM THIS • Self-publishing to streaming is now a real pipeline. Roberts published Powerless independently, it went viral, publishers came, then Amazon did. That route, BookTok first, industry second has happened enough times to be a pattern worth watching. • Enemies-to-lovers with a class divide is one of the most durable structures in fiction. Paedyn and Kai are kept apart by a system, not just personal tension. When the obstacle to romance is built into the world itself, the stakes stay high without relying on misunderstandings. • The showrunner you choose signals the tone. Ferraro's Maxton Hall background tells the fandom exactly what kind of adaptation this will be before a single scene is filmed. Showrunner choice signals tone even earlier than casting does. • A trilogy gives an adaptation a clear end. Three books, three potential seasons, one complete arc. That structural clarity is a selling point for studios and a reassurance for readers. |
Building a world divided between the powerful and the powerless, where every relationship carries the weight of that imbalance, means tracking those dynamics across a full cast before you start writing. Writeo's Character Relationship Visualizer was built for exactly that kind of layered structure.
