Colleen Hoover's Darkest Book Gets Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and an October Release Date
Verity is not a love story. Amazon MGM moved it from May to October for a reason. The trailer confirms exactly what kind of film this is.

Verity arrives in theaters October 2, 2026, from Amazon MGM Studios. Anne Hathaway plays Verity Crawford. Dakota Johnson plays Lowen Ashleigh. Josh Hartnett plays Jeremy Crawford. Michael Showalter, whose previous films include The Eyes of Tammy Faye and The Big Sick, directed.
This is Colleen Hoover's fourth book to reach screens within two years. The previous three were romances. Verity is not. Amazon moved the release from May 15 to October 2, which is what studios do when they figure out they have a thriller.

What Verity is
Struggling novelist Lowen Ashleigh is hired to ghost-write the final books in bestselling author Verity Crawford's series. Verity is incapacitated following an accident and cannot finish the work herself. Lowen takes the assignment and moves into the Crawford family home, which is where she finds an unfinished manuscript that reads like a confession to something terrible. Then she starts falling for Verity's husband, Jeremy.
The book is built on an unreliable narrator and a twist that split its readership sharply on first read. It was originally published in 2018 and reached its widest audience in 2021 when Hoover's BookTok surge was at its peak. The tone is closer to psychological thriller than romance. There is no clean resolution waiting at the end.
Why this cast is a statement
Anne Hathaway as Verity Crawford is the central casting choice. The character exists mostly through absence: what she left behind, what the manuscript says, what the accident cost her. She is morally ambiguous by design. Hathaway has shown range in difficult material before, and this role needs an actor who can make an off-screen presence feel dangerous.
Dakota Johnson as Lowen is the character the audience follows into the Crawford house. She is the one making decisions she should not make while the reader knows more than she does. That structural tension, where the audience sees more than the protagonist admits to themselves, is what the book runs on.
Josh Hartnett as Jeremy Crawford completes the triangle. His recent return to high-profile projects following Oppenheimer has made him a credible anchor for material that requires restraint rather than spectacle.

What the date move tells you
Amazon originally scheduled Verity for May 15, 2026. May is a broad commercial window positioned for opening-weekend momentum and wide audiences. October is where psychological thrillers land. The shift signals that the studio read its own film correctly and repositioned rather than forcing a mismatched release.
The trailer backs up the decision. The scene where Lowen believes she is kissing Jeremy and then discovers she is not is not designed to ease anyone in. It is disorienting on purpose. That is not a May film.
Verity opens October 2 against a fall calendar that rewards films with atmosphere and unease. Amazon is betting that Colleen Hoover's thriller readership, which has existed since 2018 and is distinct from her romance audience, will show up.
WHAT WRITERS CAN TAKE FROM THIS • Release date moves are not always bad news. A shift from May to October, for a thriller, suggests the studio understood what they had and repositioned accordingly. That is a studio making a smart call, not panicking. • Unreliable narrator structures are among the hardest things to adapt cleanly. Casting Hathaway in the ambiguous center role, a character who exists mostly through what she left behind, is a specific script-level decision. That casting choice is the adaptation's answer to the book's structural challenge. • Four adaptations in two years tests whether an author's audience travels across genres. Verity is the genre departure that answers that question for Hoover. It predates her BookTok fame. It was written before the fandom existed. This is not a cash-in. • CoHo's output covers more emotional range than her BookTok image suggests. Verity is the proof. Writers who get filed into a single category by their audience should watch how Amazon markets this one. It is a lesson in how to expand without abandoning what you built. |
